“We were given the incredible opportunity to participate in a veterinary intervention at a game lodge in the Mpumalanga area. The vet and his students darted a young lion so that they could take his measurements and fit a tracking collar. Our experienced guides placed two vehicles in strategic positions that allowed us to keep a watchful eye on the rest of the pride of lions, which remained close, as we tranquilised the young male. While the experts were doing their work, we could climb off the vehicle and take a closer look at this majestic animal. We marvelled as we compared his great paws with our tiny hands. Once the vet and team were finished, we were preparing to drive away when we realised that the battery of the vehicle we had used to shine a light on the pride of lions, was flat. Our guides had to do some interesting manoeuvring in order to get the battery jump-started. The entire experience was thrilling, exciting and sometimes nerve-wracking; but it was an afternoon I will always remember.”
