A sensational tour of Southern Africa for mom and daughter! Holly wanted to bring her adult daughter, Katie, on a best-of-the-best experience with plenty bucket list highlights. Rooms with views, great bathrooms and unique and different experiences were all a must, as well as a relaxed, guided tour of Cape Town and the Winelands, the best of the Sabi Sands Safari, seeing the Victoria Falls from the air and by boat and exploring different regions of Botswana.
Arriving mid-morning at Cape Town International Airport, Holly and Katie were met by a VIP agent for help getting through immigration and collecting their baggage before connecting with their driver in the arrivals hall. After checking in at La Residence, an indulgent paradise whose interior is filled with wonderful artwork and magnificent furniture, the mother-daughter duo could enjoy the pool, spa, gym, library and warm, personalized service, but not before enjoying a sumptuous lunch at La Petite Colombe Restaurant and a mini-exploration of the Franschhoek village. Day two of their stay brought with it a guided winelands exploration featuring Kanonkop Wine Estate, Haskell Vineyards and Delaire Graff, with a dinner reservation at La Petite Ferme.
After checking out of their hotel, the pair visited Babylonstoren for a garden walk and wine tasting, followed by lunch at Babel Restaurant. The afternoon was dedicated to a cable car trip up Table Mountain before their check-in at the Cape Grace Hotel and another heavenly dinner at famed eatery, The Test Kitchen. Day four found Holly and Katie on a bespoke Peninsula Tour with lunch in Kalk Bay at The Harbour House and another fabulous dinner at Granary at The Silo Restaurant. Day five in Cape Town was spent at leisure.
After a fabulous immersion in Cape Town, the ladies transferred from their hotel to Cape Town International Airport for their flight to Kruger Mpumalanga Nelspruit Airport. On arrival they were met and transferred by road to the elegant Singita Sabi Sands Boulders Lodge. Mother and daughter enjoyed glass-fronted suites with spectacular views of the Sand River and a private plunge pool in a wooden deck, giving the visitors their own little piece of Africa. With a one-of-a-kind bush cellar and excellent game-viewing opportunities, this lodge is also involved in many wildlife conservation projects. Days seven, eight and nine were dedicated to all things safari, including daily game drives with professional guides and trackers with opportunities to get up-close to Africa’s incredible animals. Walking safaris with an expert guide and tracker allowed the pair to track animals on foot through the wilderness and explore the magnificent plants and landscapes around them.
With their South African safari complete, it was time to head to Victoria Falls. After arriving at Livingstone Airport, Holly and Katie were met and taken to Royal Chundu Lodge by helicopter where a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River was arranged for them. From a pontoon boat, they could watch crocodiles slip off the banks under water and listen to a chorus of snorting hippos, while they had sundowner G&Ts in hand. River Lodge is set on a private stretch on the banks of the Zambezi River, just upstream from Victoria Falls, offering wonderful canoe explorations of the Zambezi River, a tour of Victoria Falls, tiger fishing challenge, private island picnics and visits to a local village. Game drives are conducted in the reserves that hug both sides of the river and with some 500 species of bird in the area, the mother-daughter duo were in for a treat.
Duba Plains Private Reserve was next on this family’s itinerary, requiring a road transfer and ferry crossing into Botswana before reaching Kasane Airport for their shuttle flight to Duba Plains Airstrip. The remote northern reaches of the Okavango Delta hold Duba Plains Camp, an intimate camp set in among open game-rich grasslands and seasonal floodplains in Botswana. Only accessible by light aircraft, the camp is renowned for its resident lion prides and their unending battles with the thousands of buffalo that roam the area. These large lions are legendary for hunting in broad daylight and for swimming in the permanent channels running between the islands that dot the landscape. Holly and Katie could embark on day and night game drives and motorboat trips in search of red lechwe, impala, kudu, tsessebe and large elephant herds. With no required routine, the pair could explore the area at their own pace.
