Parc National des Volcans, or National Volcanoes Park as it is known in English, lies in north western Rwanda and borders Virunga National Park in the Congo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. The national park, which spans 13 000 hectares, is renowned as being a sanctuary for the endangered mountain gorilla which is threatened by poaching, rapid human settlement development and disease.
It is also home to five of the eight volcanoes of the Virunga Mountains, which are characterised by their blanket of rainforest and bamboo. The park was the base for primatologist and conservationist Dian Fossey who, through her work, created a conservation strategy for the gorillas and contributed immensely to the protection and survival of the existing gorillas found here today.
Hidden amongst the dense, misty forests of these treacherous volcanic slopes you will discover a truly unique African safari experience. A hike on one of the park’s famous mountain gorilla tours can bring you into contact with these highly endangered creatures and allow you to experience one of the most intimate and poignant of African wildlife safari encounters first hand.
The film Gorillas in the Mist, the biographical account of Dian Fossey, was set and shot in the park, and it remains one of the few places left to experience an intimate encounter with these amazing creatures by tracking one of the four habituated gorilla families.
Bisate Lodge is built into the natural amphitheatre of an eroded extinct volcano.
