Overlooking a seasonal lagoon in a 25,000-acre private concession, the striking Xudum (pronounced ‘Ku-doom’) is surrounded by a number of permanent river channels and lush beds of tall papyrus, miscanthus grass, evergreen figs and ferns. The area boasts some remarkable bird-watching with 450 bird species found here, including warblers, weavers, kingfishers and Pel’s Fishing Owl. Game drives, bush walks and horseback safaris get guests closer to the region’s exceptional wildlife, including elephant, buffalo, hippo, lion, leopard, African wild dog and roan antelope.
The design of the lodge features the artful recycling of everyday objects that lend an earthy atmosphere to the otherwise glamorous property. Each of the nine private split-level suites has a unique rooftop lookout with sweeping view of the lagoon and beyond, or of the Milky Way after dark. Each one also includes a private plunge pool, large bathtub and romantic outdoor shower.
