Your Timeless Journey Awaits...

If you're considering going on a safari, you're no doubt wondering how much it will cost. The answer, unfortunately, is not a simple one.

How Much Does a Safari Cost?

If you’re considering going on a safari, you’re no doubt wondering how much it will cost. The answer, unfortunately, is not a simple one. Overall costs will depend on a variety of factors such as the safari location, time of the year, and your preferred level of comfort. However, there are also some useful guidelines to keep in mind while planning your safari expenses.

Work with a local professional travel operator:

It is not always more cost effective to plan a safari on your own and certainly will take you a lot more time. Timeless Africa Safaris have all the knowledge, skills and expertise, as well as contacts to ensure your entire holiday runs smoothly from the planning through to when your return home. We have insider knowledge and are based on-the-ground.

Consider Bespoke vs Packaged:

You may think a package deal would be the most cost-effective choice. However, we work with you to ensure that your money goes towards exactly what your dream trip entails. Packages are often based on a fixed itinerary, with no room for changes; we love to give our guests the flexibility to make changes on the fly.

Private and exclusive?

The level of privacy and exclusivity you desire will significantly impact the total cost of your safari. However, it’s essential to note that you can still have a fantastic experience in a less luxurious environment. We always say, “the animals don’t wear tuxedos, so why would you?” This is where the knowledge and experience of your agent come into play.

Fly or Drive:

Choosing between a road safari or fly-in safari is an important consideration when selecting a safari. Sometimes the options are limited, which makes the decision for you. Opting for air travel, while usually more costly, is the most efficient way of getting around, allowing you to easily transfer between safari camps and have ample time to partake in activities. The aircraft used are typically small (ranging from 4 to 12 seats), so those with an aversion to small planes should take that into consideration.

On the other hand, traveling by road in a safari vehicle, even with a private driver/guide, it can be tiring, as you cover long distances on dusty roads in safari vehicles, which can be quite time-consuming. Nonetheless, overland travel presents an opportunity to observe the countryside and local villages between destinations, providing a glimpse into the everyday lives of the locals. It is often more cost effective.

More bang for your buck:

Choose the right destination for your budget. South Africa is among the most affordable safari destinations due to a favourable Rand-Dollar exchange rate.

Why are Safaris so Pricey?

Safaris are undoubtedly an incredible experience but are often regarded as an expensive holiday. So what are the factors contribution to this?

Lack of infrastructure:

One of the main reasons for this is the lack of infrastructure in remote areas. Building a safari lodge in the middle of the African bush is not the same as building a hotel in a city. It requires the construction of roads, the transportation of materials from far and wide, digging boreholes to find water, treating the water to ensure it’s clean, and installing solar panels and battery banks for electricity. Once the lodge is built, the constant exposure to the elements means that it’s a never-ending battle to keep the property in good condition.

Food and Supplies:

Maintaining excellent standards of service also comes at a cost. Food and supplies often need to be flown in, and there are usually at least three staff members for every guest, including expert guides, chefs, waiters, housekeepers, and mechanics. All these staff members need to be paid and trained, which adds to the overall cost of a safari.

Park and Government Fees:

In addition to these costs, park and government fees need to be paid every day to protect, manage, and maintain wildlife areas. Most responsible safari operators will also charge a small amount to support local community and conservation projects.

Additional Cost:

While the upfront cost of a safari can be high, there are few additional costs once you’re on the ground. The accommodation costs are typically all-inclusive, which means that all meals, local alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, and most safari activities are already included. The only additional costs will be tips and buying souvenirs. When you receive a quote from a reputable safari operator, such as Timeless Africa, all the inclusions and exclusions for properties are clearly stated, so you can rest assured there will be no surprises later.

Peak Season:

If you’re looking to reduce the cost of a safari, you could consider traveling outside of peak season when rates are much lower, and the experience can be equally as good. Booking early to take advantage of special offers and low rates can also help keep costs down.

By understanding the factors that contribute to the cost of a safari and taking advantage of cost-saving strategies, you can make this dream trip a reality.
