10 nights: Cape Town, De Hoop Nature Reserve, Plettenberg Bay and malaria-free Shamwari Private Game Reserve
Upon arrival in Cape Town, you are warmly welcomed by your local Cape Town guide and taken by private vehicle to The One&Only Hotel. Well positioned for the whole family, the hotel is used to make guests from the oldest to the youngest feel right at home. You either take the afternoon to relax or head out to famous Camps Bay beach for an afternoon in the sun.
Whenever you have some time spare, you are within walking distance of the famous V&A Waterfront, home to hundreds of shops, boutiques, craft stores, world class restaurants, and a variety of exciting indoor and outdoor activities for kids of all ages, with the world-class aquarium a few steps away.
Younger kids are kept happy and busy in a dedicated 100m-squared clubhouse with movie and game lounge, reading area, computer room and exclusive garden. Fully supervised by multilingual staff. KidsOnly activities are centred on themed days – safari, ocean, green-wise, environment, birds and bugs – that draw upon the unique cultural and geographical attributes of Cape Town and the continent.
On your second day, your guide collects you at the hotel for a fun-filled family outing along the Cape Peninsula. This tour takes you along the False Bay coastline, past the Navy town Simonstown to Boulders Beach where you view the resident penguin colony. On to Cape Point, at the tip of the Cape Peninsula, where you take the Flying Dutchman funicular to the top to see the old lighthouse and enjoy the panoramic views, then walk down and take a great family photo.
From Cape Point, you head over Chapman’s Peak, considered one of the most scenic marine drives in the world, to Hout Bay where you meet the local fishermen, take a walk on the beach and consider a boat cruise to seal island. You visit World of Birds, Africa’s largest bird park with over 3000 birds and small animals, a perfect nature outing for children.
The next morning your guide takes you to the top of the iconic Table Mountain. You ascend via rotating aerial cableway, marvelling at the spectacular 360-degree views as they spin past. Next you transfer to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens where you picnic amongst the beautiful floral displays. The kids enjoy running around and discovering interesting flowers and shrubs, butterflies, pheasants and ponds.
On the forth day, you take a leisurely drive to Morukuru in De Hoop Nature Reserve, around 3.5 hours via the verdant Garden Route. The towering white sand dunes of De Hoop Nature Reserve are a well-known landmark and a huge playground for children and adults alike. Enjoy the coastal safari experience cocooned in utmost luxury, in your own 4-bedroom oceanfront home. Wander white beaches and dunes lapped by the Indian Ocean, as well as limestone cliffs, rock pools, wetlands and coastal fynbos.
Regardless of age, the shared thrill of seeing wild animals in their natural habitat is bonding. Whether you want to be with your kids 24/7 or crave time out, you set the boundaries, and the Morukuru team maintains them. Children are given the same individual care and attention as adults, with each child’s particular food requirements, bedding preferences, interests, age and life experiences taken into account. Including a host of child-specific activities, from tracking lessons to baking biscuits, from bush- and/or marine walks to board games. And for those kids who simply can’t live without technology, there is Wi-Fi, computer stations, DVDs and Playstation.
Everyone goes together on a 4×4 fynbos safari where the sun is shining and your guide in the open Land Rover points out every panoramic view, the birds and the animals. Active family members take an experiential learning marine walk. Bigger kids go sandboarding or snorkelling whenever they feel like it. When you have had enough fun, you grab a cold drink and a snack and take in the endless views of the coastline and the Indian Ocean. Maybe spotting whales and dolphins whilst sipping your refreshment.
After the quiet of De Hoop, you head to a quaint, bustling coastal town and stay at The Plettenberg, overlooking the ocean. Tropical, fun and energetic, The Plettenberg is the perfect spot for the whole family. Kids take part in the EcoKidz Family Challenge. They are kept busy visiting several sanctuaries like Monkeyland, the world’s first free-roaming multi-species primate sanctuary that houses over 700 primates; and Birds of Eden with more than 3500 birds. The family comes together for boat-based whale watching and dolphin tours. After all the excitement, you head to The Heath, a one-stop shop offering food, drinks, a plant nursery, shopping and a brilliant children’s playground.
The following day gives you the choice of a day outing to Storms River and the Tsitsikamma suspension bridge with optional ziplining; visiting neighbouring Knysna, with the renowned Elephant Park and lagoon cruises to Knysna Head; or simply enjoy the beach at Plettenberg Bay.
From Plett, a gentle 3-hour transfer takes you to the bush – Shamwari Private Game Reserve – a malaria free safari destination with a tailored kids programmes. Young ones are occupied with various social, sporting, arts and cultural activities; while mom and dad enjoy safaris or take a well deserved break.
With all of the destinations geared towards young families, this itinerary lets you plan around the moods and energy levels of the kids and adults. Fun packs are included along the way with activities that lets little ones keep themselves busy and create keepsakes of their journey. Transfers are kept short, whilst ensuring you get to see the top sights of the area, a perfect blend of bush and coast.
