1 – 31 October: Kinky Boots

Location: FUGARD THEATRE

4 – 6 October: Rocking the Daisies

Location: CLOOF WINE ESTATE

One of Cape Town’s biggest outdoor gatherings, it’s become one of the highlights of the festival calendar. The event takes place just outside Darling, about an hour’s drive from Cape Town. The festival hosts over 25,000 people and caters to every taste. Find out more »

5 October: Annual Penguin Festival

Location: SIMONS TOWN

The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) hosts its 17th festival. This  event gives SANCCOB a platform to highlight the plight of the iconic African penguin species and educate the public on how to play their part in supporting our conservation efforts and those of our collaborators and exhibitors. 5 October: The Bubbly Festival

Location: SHIMMY BEACH CLUB

Celebrate Spring with Champagne, Bubbly, Glitz, Glam, Fashion and the awesome entertainment. Festival goers can also expect additional crowd-pleasing activities including Champagne and bubbly tastings, live entertainment, Sabrage performance, and top end food suppliers to cover all palate requirements. 8 October: Shark Night

Location: TWO OCEANS AQUARIUM

Sharks are amongst the most popular, revered, and mysterious creatures. These predators exhibit fascinating behaviours and play critical roles in the health of ocean ecosystems, however, relatively little is known about sharks. You are invited to learn more about sharks with guest speakers from Save our Seas Foundation, Sea Search, Shark Spotters and Sea Change Project. Find out more »

11 – 13 October: Wine on the River

Location: ROBERTSON WINE VALLEY

Unwind, relax and enjoy fresh country air, beautiful scenery and warm spring sunshine with an array of delightful treats, local country cuisines and great music. Hop on a Wine Safari truck for a journey to a wine farm. The young will be entertained with a dedicated kids-area, horse rides and boat cruises. Find out more »

12 October: Cape Wine Marathon

Location: MEERENDAL WINE ESTATE

This fun and exciting bubbly marathon is a 42km, 21km, 10km, & 5km and is an adventure for the entire family. The event starts at Meerendal Wine Estate and will wind through our country’s finest wine farms. Each water point will be a social fiesta with wine, food and decadent treats. Find out more »

12 & 13 October: Elgin Blossom Weekend

Location: ELGIN

Spring has sprung, the bees are out and orchards are in blossom as the new season is celebrated. There will be a hive of activity over this weekend, which falls right in the middle of apple blossom time. 13 October: Blurred Lines Exhibition

Location: SOUTH HILLS VINEYARDS

In art, as in nature, contrasting colours and textures collide and blur. This exhibition is a representation of the artists’ interpretation of this meeting ground between natural contrasts. Featuring Artist: Karla Duterloo Mosaics. The exhibition runs until February 2020.

18 – 20 October: Cape Town International Boat Show

Location: V&A WATERFRONT

The Annual Cape Town International Boat Show, is South Africa’s premier boating and luxury lifestyle event taking place from 18-20 October 2019 at the V&A Waterfront. For the first-time the Boat Show presents a once in a lifetime VIP experience on the 60 ft luxury Ocean Princess alongside 100+ manufacturers and buyers of luxury boats, accessories and marine equipment to gather, share, and explore the many facets of the boating and related industries. 20 October: Garden Day at Norval Foundation

Location: THE NORVAL FOUNDATION

25 – 27 October: Art Franschhoek

Location: FRANSCHHOEK WINE VALLEY

Over the years Franschhoek has established itself as one of the country’s premier art destinations with its numerous art galleries and resident artists. This art festival has a little of everything – from paintings in different mediums to ceramics, African artefacts, sculptures and fine art – showcasing an array of local talent. Find out more »

26 – 27 October: Cape Town Int. Kite Festival

Location: MUIZENBERG

See some of the world’s most spectacular kites and enjoy fresh-air with family fun that’s good for mind and body. There’ll be free kite-making workshops each day, live local entertainment, craft stalls, a play area and funfair for the kids. Find out more »

26 October: Ice Cream Workshop

Location: THE RETREAT AT BOSCHENDAL

27 October: What Happens at the Edges Symposium

Location: ZEITZ MOCCA

A symposium related to the landmark exhibition Why Should I Hesitate: Putting Drawings To Work by world-renowned artist William Kentridge. 29 October: Kamers Makers

MONTHLY AND WEEKLY EVENTS

FIRST THURSDAY

The first Thursday of every month sees the city come alive with all things art and design. Museums, shops and bars are open till late with thousands of people ambling along the streets exploring the vast array of art, design, live music and performance that has come to define Cape Town as a cultural African mecca. This month it takes place on Thursday, 3 October. Find out more »

STRAWBERRY PICKING

For those wanting to experience the bounty of the Cape’s fresh produce the Winelands town of Stellenbosch is awash with the juiciest strawberries waiting to be picked. Strawberry-picking season in the Cape happens every year between October and December. Three farms that host strawberry picking are Polkadraai Strawberry Farm, Mooiberge Strawberry Farm and Helderberg Farm. Find out more »

WINE TASTING IN A “CAVE”

Take the trip over the rolling hills of the Durbanville Wine Valley and pay a visit to Klein Roosboom. The drive will be worth your while as you indulge in the delightfully delectable dishes at Jéan Restaurant or explore their unique “cave” wine tasting rooms. Each cosy alcove is quirkily decorated, with pillows, trinkets, vintage furniture and bits and bobs. As a boutique winery, it is not easy to find their wines anywhere else.

CAPE TOWN JAZZ SAFARI

On this unique musical tour, guests are invited into the home of a local jazz musician for an evening of music, intimate conversation and a ‘bord kos’, usually braaied snoek or pickled fish. The second part of the evening involves a visit to the home of a second musician for a nightcap, or (if there is something special happening) to a jazz venue for the late set. The musicians you encounter represent the sound of Cape Town. Find out more »

GALILEO OPEN AIR CINEMA

From 16 October, you can book your spot under the stars for some magical movie moments. This October see screenings of Grease at Meerendal Wine Estate, Bridget Jones’ Baby at Vergenoegd Wine Estate to a Star is Born at Kirstenboch Gardens to Zootopia at Central Park, Century City.
